Sept. 8. William F. Broaddus described a teaching and preaching position he was offering Whitescarver in Fredericksburg, Va. [Folder 1/16]. Sept. 18. Whitescarver explained his indecision concerning Broaddus's offer."The great matter is, ought I to leave the church for such considerations. There is nothing special that I am aware of, but it is a crisis with them and to have to look now for a pastor would be a drawback [Folder 1/16]" Sept. 23. Broaddus wrote that "W.A.W. has decided against my proposition. I think he has decided unwisely [folder 1/16]." Nov. 6. Broaddus asks John to "keep it before Wm. Whitescarver that the vacency in our Fredg. church school and school church is still open. Can you be my confidant and pump him? [Folder 1/17]."

Whitescarver, Broadus's close friend was his predecessor as teacher at Woodley, the home of Daniel W. Sowers. He often mentions various members of the Lewellyn Kerfoot family, with whom Broadus lived at times during his period at Woodley. Whitescarver is frequently mentioned in letters to Broadus from the Sowers family. Broadus's sister Caroline married Whitescarver in January 1849.
